A VPS for trading, and whether you need one

A VPS solves exactly one class of problem: your platform not being connected at the moment it needed to be. In Iraq that is not a rare problem.

What it actually fixes

Power cuts. The generator gap. A mobile connection that drops. A laptop that went to sleep. A Windows update at three in the morning.

None of that matters if you are trading manually at a desk and can simply reopen the platform. It matters enormously if something is supposed to be managing an open position while you are not watching — an expert advisor, a trailing stop being moved by a script, a strategy that must react within seconds.

A VPS keeps MetaTrader running in a data centre with stable power and a fast link to our trading servers, so the platform is connected whether or not your house is.

And what it does not fix

It does not make a losing strategy profitable. A robot that loses money on a laptop loses money faster on a server with better uptime. Hosting is insurance against disconnection, not against a bad idea.

It also does not protect a position that has no stop attached. Orders you place on the server — stop loss, take profit — already survive your device being off. If your plan is "I will close it if it goes wrong", a VPS does not help, because that plan lives nowhere at all.

A stop on the server already survives a power cut. A VPS is for the strategies that have to keep thinking.

Do you actually need one?

Before you trust any robot with it

A VPS makes an EA reliable, which makes a bad EA reliably expensive. The order of operations matters.

A backtest curve going smoothly up and to the right proves very little on its own: parameters get tuned until they fit the past, spreads are assumed tighter than they are, and a test run on one-minute bars cannot know whether your stop or your target was hit first inside the same minute.

Run the EA forward on a demo account, over the hours you actually intend to trade, for long enough to include a bad week. A backtest is a hypothesis; a forward test is evidence. Then host it.

Watch for the pattern that flatters a curve: no stop loss, position size increasing after a loss, and no meaningful drawdown in the history. All three together means the risk is in the part of the history you have not seen yet.

Common questions

Do I need a VPS to use an expert advisor?

Not technically, but an EA on a home computer stops working the moment the power or the connection does — and you will not know until you look.

Will a VPS make my EA profitable?

No. It keeps the platform connected. It protects a working strategy from outages; it cannot rescue a losing one.

What happens to my open trades if my internet drops?

They stay open — a disconnection closes nothing. Any stop or target attached to the position still executes on our server.

Are expert advisors allowed at TNFX?

Yes, on every account type, along with scalping and hedging.

Can I test an EA before paying for hosting?

Yes. Run it on a demo account over the hours you intend to trade, for long enough to include a bad week.
