The best hours to trade, in Baghdad time

The market runs 24 hours, but the hours are not equal. Some cost you half as much to trade as others, and the difference is decided by when London and New York are awake.

The three sessions, in local time

Baghdad sits three hours ahead of London in winter and two in summer. That puts the most valuable part of the trading day in your afternoon and evening rather than in the middle of the night, which is a genuine advantage over traders in East Asia or the Americas.

The Asian session runs through the Iraqi early morning. It is the quietest of the three for major currency pairs, but it is meaningful for gold, and ranges tend to be narrower.

The London session opens late morning Baghdad time and is where the majority of daily currency volume trades. Spreads tighten noticeably as it opens.

New York opens in the Iraqi late afternoon, and for a few hours both London and New York are trading at once. This overlap is the deepest liquidity of the entire day.

When the trading day actually is

If you can choose when you trade, the overlap is the cheapest window of the day.

London and New York overlap from about 16:00 to 20:00 Baghdad time — the deepest liquidity of the day, and the tightest spreads.

Why the overlap matters to your costs

Spread is not a fee the broker sets arbitrarily — it reflects how many buyers and sellers are competing at that moment. When London and New York are both open, there are more of both, so the gap between the bid and the ask narrows.

Trade the same strategy in the thin hours after New York closes and you pay materially more per trade for identical positions. Over a few hundred trades that difference is often larger than the edge the strategy was supposed to produce.

This is also why a backtest can mislead. Historical testing using average spreads flatters a strategy that happens to trade mostly in expensive hours. If your system trades at 2am Baghdad time, test it with the spreads that actually apply then.

Common questions

What time does the forex market open in Iraq?

The trading week opens Monday morning Baghdad time and runs continuously until the Friday close. Within that, the London session opens late morning and New York in the late afternoon, Baghdad time.

When are spreads tightest for a trader in Iraq?

During the London-New York overlap, which falls in the Iraqi late afternoon and evening. That window has the deepest liquidity of the day and therefore the narrowest spreads.

Is it worth trading the Asian session from Iraq?

For major currency pairs it is the quietest session with narrower ranges. For gold it is more active, and it falls at a convenient local hour, which is why many Iraqi traders prefer it.

Does the time change with daylight saving?

Yes. Iraq does not shift its clocks, but London and New York do, so the sessions move by an hour relative to Baghdad twice a year. Check the platform clock rather than assuming.
